Facebook account disabled

Bookmark and Share

29/10/2008 Good old facebook has booted a few Tokyo techies off their website (I think it’s just a glitch though). Maybe a sign from the Japanese Gods that we should be using mixi (*_*)

Interesting check as to how much one depends on facebook, please check which apply:

  1. How dare you disable my account, do you realise how long it took me to build up a million friends?
  2. Bummer, no one can contact me now
  3. Good, less procrastination
  4. Like I give a shit. I’m used to facebook deleting things e.g. when they deleted the killer app I spent a few weeks working on

Update: Japanese techies affected aswell

Update 2: Word from facebook, they want to verify my identity:

Hi Chris,

Thanks for providing this information. At this time, we cannot verify the ownership of the account. Please send a scanned image of a government issued ID (e.g. driver’s license) to idrequests@facebook.com in order to confirm your ownership of the account. Please black out any personal information that is not needed to verify your identity (e.g. social security number). Rest assured that we will permanently delete your ID from our servers once we have used it to verify the authenticity of your account.

Additionally, you should make sure to copy and paste all of our previous correspondence into your message when you reply. Once we have received this information, we will reevaluate the status of the account. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thanks for contacting Facebook,

Daisy

Nasty Facebook. We miss you! Well, specifically, I miss sentence-game, and I’m guessing its current malaise may be connected to this.

What right does Facebook have to verify MY identity?

It’s a free service. If they say use a real name, and I do– what right do they have to make me prove it with a government ID? I know they have a T.O.S., but forcing users to comply with official IDs for some social networking site is ludicrous.

    Hi Monty,

I emailed them and then they asked for proof of my identity.
I scanned an mailed my passport (after blanking out the passport number with photoshop).
They let me back in after about 48 hours.

Ok thanks. I was wondering why it seemed to happen to quite a few Japan accounts at the same time, but I guess Facebook didn’t say? Passport ID for a social networking site, that is surprising!

Greedings to all FaceBook users my FaceBook account was “DISABLE” 05-03-09 for to many friends request. but when you read the terms of Agreedment it dose not say how many friend request you can add like for example you can only add 50/100/75 something like that but when you read the Agreedment it dose not say anything about that. but at the end of the day i realy like FaceBook thank you.HARVEY

    Hey Guys
I live in Singapore and had my account disabled too! It was weird. I was going to attempt a quiz then suddenly I had a login request. I thought it was a technical glitch but then came out ‘Account Disabled’. It must be a mistake. It’s outrageous that facebook does that without notification or warning. I’m pissed

Wow emailing official documents - driving license / passport etc. Thats a big NO NO in my book - jeez I think facebook had enough nformation on me for identity theft as it was - REALLY give it a good long thinking before handing over that kind of documentation to anyone let alone a ’social networking’ site.

Facebook seems faceless to me in relation to the robotic effects of FARCEbook trying to protect themselves from what their farcebots consider is ’spam’. One might have thought that people would use the same message on a large portion of friends saving time on re-writing BUT not FARCEbook who see it as a dangerous action. Sadly their farcebots can’t tell the difference from adverts and social connectivity of human beings – though one could think that checking up on private messages sent to friends to invite them to connect fell outside the scope of control and into the scope of privacy.
Of course don’t get me started on someone being disabled not getting the right of reply – defending themselves with being able to collect their history and not knowing what the hell they’ve been ‘disabled’ – ‘crippled’ – cut off or whatever else you’d like to call it. I don’t know if anyone’s read Franz Kafka ‘The Trial” but it certainly seemed poignant to me FARCEbook appears very Kafkaesque. Faceless farce book!
